The Joseon Tongsinsa is a large peace envoy dispatched to Japan during the Joseon Dynasty. In addition to officials bearing the message of the sovereign, Japan requested the dispatch of doctors, painters, and acrobats. The recordings on the Joseon Tongsinsa, which greatly influenced the various industries of Japan, including the arts and culture, were registered as UNESCO Memory of the World in Japan and Korea. By selling his land in his hometown, Baeksan Ahn Hui-je opened Baeksan Shop and financially supported the Independence Movement with profits from the shop. Since Baeksan Shop’s expansion into the Baeksan Trade in 1919, it had played a significant role as a base for the local independence movement until 1928. Arrested in 1942, Ahn Hui-je was brutally tortured and passed away in 1943 without witnessing the country’s independence. Baeksan Memorial Hall was built on the site of Baeksan Shop to honor Baeksan Ahn Hui-je’s spirit of independence.

On the 15th day of the first lunar month of each year, the Haeundae Full Moon & Spa Festival is held to welcome the marvelous sight of the full moon. At the start of the street parade, the festival’s atmosphere is heightened with the viewing of a celebratory performance of traditional Korean song and dance. The Bonfire Festival, which is the highlight of the event, begins when the full moon is about to rise. On the other hand, the Moon House is filled with notes containing people’s wishes for the new year. After a boisterous countdown by everyone present, the Moon House is set on fire with the traditional farmers’ music band adding to the gaiety of the occasion.
