2024 K-museums Special Joint Exhibition Yummy Yummy Busan

The Busan Marine Natural History Museum (hereafter “museum”) will host the "National Folk Museum of Korea 2024 K-museums Special Joint Exhibition Yummy Yummy Busan"
from June 25 to December 1 in the museum’s Special Exhibition Hall.
This exhibition is jointly planned and supported by the National Folk Museum of Korea as it was selected in the last December's “K-museums” public contest.
The intent of this exhibition is to present an educational and enjoyable exhibition on Busan’s city fish, mackerel, and the city’s marine and fisheries culture.
The exhibition will open with an opening ceremony at 14:00 on June 24 and will be held over 138 days from June 25 to December 1.
In particular, the exhibition will draw your attention to the biological and nutritional features of mackerel as well as 100 artifacts on loan from national and public museums and specimens from museum collections
so that visitors can enjoy the city’s unique marine and fisheries culture and the disappearing gogalbi (grilled marinated mackerel) culture.

The exhibition is divided into: "Bumyeodeulda" and "Gomyeodeulda."
- In Part 1, "Bumyeodeulda: Flapping Mackerel," the exhibition explores how mackerel established its place in Busan’s culture through artifacts and media exhibitions.
In particular, it focuses on the process through which Busan became the center of mackerel distribution in Korea, through markets such as the Busan Cooperative Fish Market and the Jagalchi Market, and explains how mackerel came to become the city fish of Busan.
- In Part 2, "Gomyeodeulda: Yummy Gogalbi," the exhibition examines how the people of Busan have left their imprint on mackerel in Korea through artifacts, recreations, and visual and audio media.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the recreation of the Gogalbi Street in Gwangbok-dong during the 1970s and the 1980s, which serves a flash of nostalgia alongside information on how mackerel became a star of the dining table, how it is prepared in Korea, and a map of restaurants famed for their mackerel dishes.

In addition, the exhibition offers a variety of interactive exhibits on mackerel,
from ▲songs about mackerel, delivered by LP and CD players, ▲preparing mackerel dishes, ▲reading books about mackerel, and ▲writing notes to mackerel.

Through this exhibition, we hope that the people of Busan will have the opportunity to rediscover the mackerel as the city fish of Busan and the city’s unique marine and fisheries culture.
