Mangyang-ro in Busan was a mountain road of refugees during the Korean War. Today, though, connected with Ibagu-gil in Choryang-dong, Dong-gu, the road winding down the mountain is a great vantage point where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the old downtown and the sea in front of the city. One of the unique features of this road you might find interesting is that the rooftop of some of the houses under it serves both as a parking lot and observatory.

An unfamiliar structure hides among the apartment complexes: an Islamic masjid, a rare sight in Korea. “Masjid” means mosque, a Muslim place of worship and literally, an Islamic place of prayer. Located in Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, the Busan Al-Fatih Masjid is the second of 19 masjids opened in South Korea. Built in 1980 with the help of a Libyan benefactor, it has served as a spiritual refuge for Muslims and as a bridge for raising awareness of Islam in Korea.

A house with 100 years of history

Ohchoryang

Number of clicks4328   Number of reviews0   Like2
Ohchoryang, whose name combines the exclamation “Oh!” with “Choryang” (meaning a path in the grass), is a Japanese-style wooden house built in 1925 by the Japanese architect Tanaka Hideyoshi. At that time, the only Japanese houses in the area were the Chosen Government Railway Civil Engineers’ Waiting Room and Ohchoryang, while the surrounding area was a Korean village. After liberation, the Korean entrepreneur and founder of Taechang Enterprise became the new owner and incorporated Korean cultural elements into the typical ‘Japanese enemy house’, creating a space that blends the history of modern housing and living. In 2007, the building was designated as Registered Cultural Property No. 349. Today, it is managed by the Ilmac Foundation, a subsidiary of Taechang Enterprise, and has been transformed into a multicultural space that hosts various exhibitions.
