Forty Stairs (Jungang Station)

Going up the stairs from Exit 9 or 11 of Jungang Station, you’ll find a street that appears as if it’s stuck in time. This is Forty Stairs Street, where you can get a sense of the atmosphere during the Korean War. The place served as a market where relief goods were unloaded from docks and traded in a shanty town formed around the stairs. It was also well known as a place where separated families reunite. On every corner of the street are sculptures installed to represent the past lives, thus allowing you to understand the situations of those days.

2Busan Citizens Park is back to provide places to help citizens have a relaxing time.
Military camp and park—these two words do not match well together. However, there is a place where a military camp is reborn as a park, namely Busan Citizens Park. For 70 years after the liberation in South Korea, this place had been called the “US Army Camp Hialeah,” but now it’s back as a resting area for people in Busan.

3Seomyeon and Samjung Tower, the essence of downtown Busan
The largest downtown in Busan is no doubt Seomyeon. It is the symbol of a global downtown and the mecca of shopping for men and women, Koreans and foreigners alike. At Seomyeon, a place packed with fun activities to do and delicious food to eat, you have to be careful not to bump into people when walking on the streets during the daytime or nighttime. Samjung Tower is a landmark that recently became popular in Seomyeon. All 16 floors are taken up by famous restaurants, coffee shops, food trucks, kids cafés, a play-themed park, and a movie theater, making it a great complex cultural space to spend the entire day!

Recall the history with Forty Stairs
4Recall the history with Forty Stairs
What happened to the traveler who cried on the flight of the Forty Stairs away from their sweet home? The Forty Stairs was a shelter for the refugees who yearned to go back to their hometown. Climb the 40 steps to experience what life’s sorrow must have been like for the refugees. Located nearby Jungang Station of Busan Metro Line 1, the Forty Stairs became the center of the lives of the refugees gathered from all over the country to the old Busan Station building. The Forty Stairs served as the passage that connected Busanhang Port’s dock to the shantytown on the hillside, a square where separated families met, and a market for selling relief items. There used to be a saying called “Let’s meet by the Forty Stairs in Busan,” and some waited by the stairs believing these words. The Forty Stairs is a place that contains the sorrows of a refugee’s burdensome life around Busan Station.
