By selling his land in his hometown, Baeksan Ahn Hui-je opened Baeksan Shop and financially supported the Independence Movement with profits from the shop. Since Baeksan Shop’s expansion into the Baeksan Trade in 1919, it had played a significant role as a base for the local independence movement until 1928. Arrested in 1942, Ahn Hui-je was brutally tortured and passed away in 1943 without witnessing the country’s independence. Baeksan Memorial Hall was built on the site of Baeksan Shop to honor Baeksan Ahn Hui-je’s spirit of independence.
