October is the month of festivals.
Busan holds numerous festivals, and the Dongnaeeupseong History Festival, held in autumn, has been established as Dongnae’s major festival with over 20 years of history as its theme.
The Dongnae Magistrate Parade, in which a thousand people participate, indicates the start of the Dongnaeeupseong History Festival and takes us back to 1592 in Dongnae.
The historical musical The Lonely Fortress, which has become a symbol of the Dongnaeeupseong History Festival, is held in front of the North Gate of Dongnaeeupseong Walled Town. It vividly depicts the history of Dongnae’s people risking their lives to defend the Dongnaeeupseong Walled Town during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The actors’ serious performances and great songs take the audience back to 1592 when local people were fiercely fighting against the Japanese invaders.
Held at a low hill of the Dongnaeeupseong Walled Town, the Dongnaeeupseong History Festival is visited by many families who want to enjoy the festival and the clear, pleasant autumn day in the grass field. It provides various experience programs, including history-related activities for children.
It is also comprised of events related to Joseon culture. In particular, a professional storyteller (jeongisu in Korean) will narrate an interesting story while sitting on a straw mat on the floor together with the audience, who will enjoy this analog-oriented activity.

The wish tunnel attracts visitors with pleasant, warm yellow wish lanterns, which are said to carry people’s prayers and messages of hope.
While Samullori (Korean percussion music) is performed by the band, people play the Dongnae Tug-of-War using a rope with three strands. This traditional folk game of Dongnae has been conducted every year to commemorate the local people’s unity.
The Dongnaeeupseong History Festival will be a great venue to remember and promote local history and enjoy traditional entertainment with people.
