Design to Live by

”Hyundai Motorstudio Busan,” the first of its kind opened outside the Metropolitan Area, was planned to allow people to experience design-related contents that had been concentrated in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi region. The studio goes by the main theme of “Design to Live by” as it focuses on the power of design that reflects the desires of humankind and enriches life. Although being named a “motorstudio,” it does not display any mass-produced cars. Instead, it hosts design-based exhibits and showcases concept cars and art collaboration vehicles that reveal the future vision of Hyundai Motor Company.

Reborn as a complex cultural space after being utilized as an exhibit space for the Busan Biennale in 2016, F1963 was originally the site of an old steel factory of Kiswire. The building of Hyundai Motorstudio Busan also utilized this facility and its wires and steel frames as core materials to exude a futuristic and urban vibe.

Hyundai Motorstudio Busan

The building, which consists of 4 floors, has a long, rectangular shape. On the first floor, an LED creative wall welcomes visitors first. This is a great place where visitors can encounter digital media works at any time of the year.

The second floor is an exhibit space. It features an exhibition that reflects Hyundai Motor Company’s unique design philosophy and future direction. Since the first exhibit, titled “REFLECTIONS IN MOTION,” there have been consistent groundbreaking exhibits. Here, you can check out works that allow you to imagine a sustainable future through residential solutions for future generations. The exhibit space also has a small shop in a corner that sells design goods.

The third floor is designed in a way that you can look down the exhibit on the second floor. It also features an additional exhibit space and a rest area. The Learning Zone on the fourth floor is equipped with design-related books and a workshop space. Here, a variety of programs are taking place from upcycling DIY utilizing waste automotive parts to design and puzzle workshops for children.
The convenience facilities are nice as well. “Michael's Urban Farm Table” located on the fourth floor is the first-ever branch of “Michael's by Haevichi,” a restaurant run by Haevichi Hotel & Resort in Jongno, Seoul. Here, the “New American Cuisine” is served with seasonal ingredients gathered near Busan. At “Cafe by Haevichi” on the first floor, you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee and its signature juice lineup.

F1963

Once you have thoroughly enjoyed Hyundai Motorstudio Busan, come down to the first floor and take a tour of F1963. As you walk down the stairs from the second floor, a gardening studio called “Hwasumok” awaits you with its flowers and trees. Many different activities and classes under the theme of plants take place here. “Dalbit Garden” is located in front of Hwasumok. It is a gorgeous space where a variety of trees and plants display beautiful scenes throughout the year, which is why it is a popular destination for photographers. The red brick house on one side of the garden is the “glass greenhouse,” a place that offers the opportunity for reading and meditation under cozy sunlight.

Also, do not miss out on “F1963 Library,” an art library. Here, you can access to various books and materials related to art, architecture, photography, design and music. It is run by a membership system, but non-members may also enter with a daily fee.

Kiswire Museum and Mangmidan-gil Street

There are many things to see around Hyundai Motorstudio Busan as well. “Kiswire Museum,” located right behind F1963, offers a look at the history of Kiswire and the wire industry as a whole. As the museum of a wire manufacturer, it is designed in a way that the building is supported and maintained only by wires so you would feel as if you are looking at an artwork rather than a piece of construction. From the rooftop, which is decorated as a grass hill, Centum City spreads refreshingly before your feet.

Suyeong Historical Park is also situated not too far away. It was where the Headquarters of the Gyeongsangjwa-do Naval Force Commander, which oversaw four military camps on the Southern Coast during the Joseon Dynasty, used to be, and there are many historical sites here including Altar to Twenty-five Heroes, which enshrines the 25 heroes who lost their lives while defending Suyeongseong Fortress, and the Shrine to General An Yongbok who protected Dokdo Island during the Joseon Dynasty. “Mangmdan-gil Street,” located near Mangmi Station on Subway Line No. 3, is a popular place to hang out for youngsters as it is filled with pretty cafes and delicious restaurants on vintage streets. Recently, a complex cultural space made of container boxes called “B-Con Ground” opened its doors to help evolve Mangmidan-gil Street into a trendier area.
