Places around mountainside roads are counted among the unique attractions of Busan, and the most famous is Gamcheon Culture Village. Hocheon Village is also one of them, widely known as the location for the K-drama “Fight for My Way.” In the old days, tigers were said to frequently roam the mountain’s rough and irregular sides. Now, they’re gone, but the hillside is dotted with clusters of households with orange-warm street lamps that illuminate the alleys.
Hocheon Village is particularly recommended for a romantic “night view,” so it’s best to come at night, when this place is at its loveliest. As it requires you to walk all the harsh and long mountainside road to get there, it’s better to take a shuttle bus or taxi. On your way back, you can just walk down and enjoy the scenery and alleys of the road.
Once you enter the Hocheon Cultural Platform adjacent to the mountainside road, you’ll instantly see the red sign that says “Fight for My Way” and the yellow light bulb. Here, you can visit Namil Bar, a filming site of the drama, which makes us feel as though we’re part of it. This is the place where the main characters of “Fight for My Way,” with all the interesting personalities in the drama, enjoyed tteokbokki and beer and poured out their troubles against the backdrop of the night view. It became the “Fight for My Way” culture unique to this village that people hang soju bottles into which they put messages of such troubles or wishes.
In addition to Namil Bar, there are plenty of props and scenes that you can use while pretending you’re one of the drama characters. Raise your head suddenly, and notice the picturesque view of the mountainside road under your feet.
After passing through the wall paintings of tigers, you’ll see a villa where the real Namil Bar is—on a rooftop of the private house where people live. So the one you visited in the Hocheon Cultural Platform is a film set. You may feel wistful, but find satisfaction by just looking at the real Namil Bar, and respect the residents.
Enter the Hocheon Life Culture Center where you can take a short rest while relaxing your tired legs. At the center is a café with a pretty name “Kkeuti.” In the Busan dialect, this means “the end” and was named so as it’s located at the end of Hocheon Village. A cup of coffee with a nice view makes the sojourn even more special.
After passing through the center, you’ll see “180 Stairs,” which sharply stretch down in two rows. Go down the stairs carefully and look up. The blue tiles attached on the stairs look like a cascade. Designed with the paintings of carps powering through the cascading water and peacefully blooming lotus, this staircase is a work of art.
Hocheon Village has many different charms that come from various angles, all depending on the story. What’s your story? If you’ve watched the K-drama, you can enjoy the village because of your memories, but if you haven’t, you can appreciate the beauty unique to Hocheon Village. Either way, your visit to the village will remain in your memory like the dazzling yellow light bulbs.
