An unfamiliar structure hides among the apartment complexes: an Islamic masjid, a rare sight in Korea. “Masjid” means mosque, a Muslim place of worship and literally, an Islamic place of prayer. Located in Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, the Busan Al-Fatih Masjid is the second of 19 masjids opened in South Korea. Built in 1980 with the help of a Libyan benefactor, it has served as a spiritual refuge for Muslims and as a bridge for raising awareness of Islam in Korea.
