The Hoedong Reservoir is a large area that combines rivers, lakes, and forests. It has long been untouched by people and, thus, expresses an intact nature. Its two trails, Ttangmoesan Mountain Red Clay Forest Trail and Galmaetgil Trail, and its hinoki cypress forest are famous “healing spots” beloved by many city dwellers who love to walk in the woods.

The Hoedong Reservoir trail, which allows you to walk comfortably while enjoying the forest and lake, can be divided into the western section and the eastern section. The western section starts from Hoedong Dam and passes through the Forest Experience Center and leads to the hinoki cypress forest, Oryundae Observatory, and Sanghyeon Village. On the other hand, the eastern section starts from the last bus stop of Hoedong-dong and leads to Dongdaegyo Bridge, Bodeongmun Gate, Jinmyeonggyo Bridge, a place of resting and observatory, and Seondonggyo Bridge. The distance of the Hoedong Reservoir Trail is about 20 km, and it takes 5 hr to complete and return to the origin. Therefore, if this is your first time to visit the place, it is recommended that you choose the western section, which is flat and well established, along the reservoir.

The western trail along the water’s edge has many viewing points and resting areas where you can peacefully enjoy the view of Hoedong Reservoir and its surrounding mountain ridge.

Walk for a while on the small path in the forest and the wooden deck trail, and you’ll get to a lake marsh full of mysterious-looking trees. The trail continues with the beautiful natural scenery, leading you to Ttangmoesan Eco Forest. This is where the Red Clay Forest Trail is, and it’s good to walk along it barefooted. Walking through the thick cypress forest, you’ll enjoy the cool texture of the red clay that touches your bare feet. It’s a good time to take off your tight hiking boots and expose your feet to the fresh air.

Leave the flat trail behind, and climb the steep slope. It’s a slightly hard path but well worth it to reach the peak of Bueongsan Mountain. This is a 15 min section, but after you finish, you’ll be rewarded with a view from the mountaintop that is so beautiful it’d make you feel as if you’re in heaven. The mountain peaks that surround the tranquil lake and the villages that sit quietly in the mountains are so peaceful it feels like you’ve found a little paradise in the middle of the city. You’re allowed to stay in the area for a long time to the point that you wouldn’t want to leave.
