Our day begins at Seokbulsa Temple, one of Buk-gu’s best-known Buddhist temples. Seokbulsa Temple is renowned for its monumental Buddhas carved directly into the natural rock face on the slopes of Geumjeongsan Mountain. Stone carvings of such unusual scale are rarely found at Korean temples. The chance to see them up close has made Seokbulsa one of Busan’s best-kept secrets. The temple is also popular with international visitors. The ancient rock carvings have stood amid nature for centuries. Up close, their immense scale and sense of mystery make the setting feel almost cinematic.

After lunch, we headed to Caelium, a large café and cultural complex that has recently become popular in Buk-gu. The name means “sky meets inspiration,” a fitting description of the sweeping mountain views framed by its large windows. Brunch, pastries, and mountain views make a memorable combination.

Live jazz performances fill the space in the evening, bringing a different mood to the café. Its distinctive exterior, reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum, is also a popular photo spot. With seating areas that offer a different atmosphere on each floor and a spacious terrace, it was an ideal place to relax. The bakery selection is especially broad, with plenty of excellent choices. Be sure to try Caelium’s signature Mandeok Tunnel Bread.
