Kangkangee Arts Village where history lives on

Number of clicks16,641   Number of reviews2   좋아요2
Ships are packed in the lighters wharf across the Jagalchi Market beyond the Yeongdo Bridge. This is where the legendary mecca of fixing ships, the Kangkangee Arts Village, is located. The word “kangkangee” comes from the sound of a hammer hitting the surface of the ship to strip away old and rusty paint or shells at the shipyard. From the days when the ceaseless sound of fixing ships was heard, Daepyeong-dong was called Kangkangee Arts Village. If you think that the workers making the sounds of fixing ships are men, you are mistaken. The workers who relied on a single rope to fix ships for a long time are the married women of Daepyeong-dong. They are women of steel who endured the hard work at the shipyard while suffering from the noise and ringing in the ears to provide a better future for their children.

A path where the sky and the sea meet, Yeondaebong Peak on Gadeokdo Island!

Number of clicks16,409   Number of reviews5   좋아요6
Gadeokdo Island, whose name came from its abundance of bonnet bellflower roots called deodeok, is the largest island in Busan. However, it is also a strange place for some people because it is located at the west end of Busan, and is said to have been inhabited since the New Stone Age. Historically, it had a long ill-fated relationship with Japan from the Japanese invasion of Korea to the Japanese occupation. In addition, Yeondaebong Peak, the highest point of the island, has firmly embraced its heartbreaking history until today.

The world is changing rapidly, but it isn’t true of this place; it’s as if time stood still. Tightly packed, shabby back-to-back houses, and alleys in between through which only one or two adults can manage to pass. This unusual landscape arouses retro-sensibility, but you won’t be soaked in the sentiment when you learn about its history. Let’s take a look at Somak Village in Uam-dong.

Dong-gu is a town where the seed of Busan’s modern and contemporary history has spread and blossomed into stories. If you follow the trail that embodies the stories, you will reach Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong. Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong was originally called Jeongnangak House . The building was built in 1943, during the Japanese occupation, following the traditional Japanese housing style. Thanks to its unique charm, this space has been used as the setting for many films such as the Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time and General’s Son as well as music videos, including IU’s “Night Letter.”

Busan is becoming a new mecca of coffee with cafes of various styles and tastes. Since there are so many hip cafes, quiet and relaxing cafes, and extra-large cafes in the city, choosing which one to go can be a challenge. Among them are those with a theme of hanok. Hanoks, or Korean traditional houses, are known to lend an air of tranquility and relaxation. I have recently visited a number of cafes with a hanok interior, and found them to be an excellent place of relaxation.

Abalone rice porridge that delivers Gijang Ocean’s rich flavors into your mouth

Number of clicks16,249   Number of reviews2   좋아요1
Abalone rice porridge is one of the most familiar dishes among Korean people. Despite its popularity, the authentic dish—made with abalone intestine, making it green and slightly bitter—is not easy to find. Korean porridge restaurants usually serve the white porridge lacking abalone intestine because the ingredient is easily perishable, requiring a location near the ocean for immediate cooking of fresh abalones.

Some people say that it’s the sea’s job to create waves. However, what matters is that we’re able to wipe all our worries away just by watching the sea work its magic. Unlike summer, the winter sea exemplifies tranquility and respite by itself. People, who once filled the shores last summer have disappeared like the ebbing tide. The days of the hustle and bustle are gone, and the beach has now reclaimed its serenity. This is the best time to enjoy the charms of the sea to the fullest.

Walking outside the station and crossing the street brings you to Busan Chinatown and Texas Street. Just a short walk away lies Choryang Ibagu-gil, the living, breathing monument to the modern history of Busan and Korea. Like the story of Ariadne and the Labyrinth, Choryang Ibagu-gil leads the travelers into the mazes of the shantytown, into the past of the city.
