2020 Collection: Confronting Today’s Questions, unveils a selection of the artworks collected by the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan since 2017, when preparations for the opening of the museum first began. The exhibition aims both to generate dialogue with and between the citizens of Busan  and to encapsulate the identity of the museum. As the title of this exhibition implies, the museum is ceaselessly accumulating and exploring a never-ending array of questions and research regarding the world of the present, of the “here and now”, which today’s artists are building. From artworks in traditional styles, such as paintings and sculptures, to newer styles of fusion and convergence that provide all manner of visual and perceptual experiences, we are striving to establish a collection of mainly modern artworks of profound contemporary social, economic and cultural implications. 

From among the total of 187 works in the collection, 22 were selected for this exhibition, which most effectively represent the core values and goals of the museum’s acquisition policy. Firstly, we hope to be active as a public art museum based in Busan in reflecting the evolution of local contemporary art. A public art museum is the face of a city, and should aim to become a glocal museum, expanding into the national and international community, based on its unique local foundations. Thus, the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan hopes that the keen interest and affection of visitors for local art will continue to grow as we advance on our shared journey into the vibrant history of contemporary art in Busan. 

Second, through new media art and the medium of digital technology, we offer visitors the opportunity to expand their consciousness through art. According to media theorist, Marshall McLuhan, the technology used in each era creates a new human ecology and human behavior is conditioned accordingly. The development of high-tech has expanded the realm of art into an entirely different aesthetic genre which utilizes mechanical engineering and electronic media, alongside analog-based artworks. The exhibition presents works from across a wide spectrum, including sound art that focuses on hearing beyond the style of visual art, kinetic art that uses electrical power as the main means of motion, light art, and interactive art that is completed through the participation of visitors. Viewers are encouraged to conduct their own experiments on ways to sense and assimilate the world through a new level of visual and perceptual communication. 

Thirdly, we would like to act as a repository for historical reference information, the study of which will contribute to new understanding and values in national and international contemporary art. Breaking free of the concept of identifying the current era simply as an extension of the past, contemporary art suggests a process in which both the present moment and the landscape of human consciousness explore one another. The exhibition features artworks that have a strong sense of artistic praxis rooted in the technological environment and important issues of the day and encourages viewers to engage with art in multiple contexts whilst simultaneously rethinking their present. 

The exhibition seeks to avoid the one-sided notion that unilinear explanations can be provided to convey meaning in art. In other words, we hope that the viewers themselves will be encouraged to reexamine their own philosophies, discover their own identities, and based there upon, generate meaningful dialogue in their lives and the world. In addition, the museum, as a mine of creative potential both in the present and for the future, seeks to celebrate through this show its continuing progress with the citizens of Busan.
